In Chapter 5 I discuss striving to reach a surplus which will boost ones capital when thinking of buying a home or investment property. Instead of that word budgeting let's focus on accruing a surplus that will grow into something big enough to make a good deposit for a home or investment property. Looking at things/items that are not necessary on a weekly basis, e.g two cups of coffee at the cafe a day will add up to around $70 a week; Sunday breakfast for two people would make a further $40 spend. Just looking at these two "normal" habits will boost savings enough to create a surplus. Let's think of this as discipline and creativity and find other things to do to replace these "off the cuff" decisions, e.g have a BBQ of bacon and eggs at the park inviting another couple/friends; take a walk in the work break and bring a thermos of coffee to work. No pain, no gain they say, and after all old habits die hard! Encourage your friends to join the "surplus" idea. This could lead to a challenge!
