Before I start my story I have not heard of a person/couple, of average means, that regret buying a home. Why? Often by the time of retirement the home is the most valuable asset they have. For those born in the 1960's their superannuation might be their best chance of having a good retirement.
Over the years I have heard several stories about how people have attempted to get into an ideal home; a home where they want to be; not a home that is not exactly their best choice for location or style. There are options, eg. buy a house or two and rent a house for yourself in a more suitable locality until the value of the investment increases. This could be 5 or 10 years down the track when it is an ideal time to rethink your purchasing power. I have just read that one in eight "rentvestors" choose a similar option, ie "to get into the market".
Chapter 7 of my my book does set out a lot of facts to check out whether you be an Owner (principal place of residence) or Owner (landlord/investor).
This quote by Henry Ford is inspiring "if you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you've always got."
